International Agencies and Organisations

ABC
Agricultural Biotechnology Center: contains information on safety aspects of biotechnology, especially: laboratory chemical and biosafety, use and release of genetically modified organisms, biodiversity issues pertinent to biotechnology.
ABSA
The American Biological Safety Association (A.B.S.A.) aims to foster recognition of Biological Safety as a distinct scientific discipline, to promote biological safety, to establish a forum for the continued exchange of information on biological safety, and to provide an organization that will recognize the needs and represent the interests of persons in biological safety.
ASM
The American Society for Microbiology (ASM) is the oldest and largest single life science membership organization in the world (over 40,000 members today located throughout the world). ASM programs, products and services, including links to other scientific resources.
BBP - Belgian Biosafety Professionals
The Belgian Biosafety Professionals (BPP, a Belgian section of EBSA) provide a forum for biosafety professionals to exchange experience, developments and issues in biosafety practices and regulation in a Belgian context. As a platform for professionals, BBP provides regular opportunities to meet colleagues, to learn about biosafety topics and to discuss practical and regulatory issues. It emphasizes the direct involvement of the members.
BINAS
Biosafety Information Network and Advisory Service. BINAS is a service of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization maintained in cooperation with the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB). BINAS monitors global developments in biosafety. It provides information that can be used in assessing the safety of biotechnological applications.
EBSA
The European Biosafety Association (EBSA) was founded in June 1996 to promote biosafety as a scientific discipline and serve the growing needs of the biosafety professionals throughout Europe.
EFB
"European Federation Biotechnology's Task Group on Safety in Biotechnology".
The objective of the Task Group is to help maintain the excellent safety record of biotechnological operations through its activities and by creating an information network through its national members and members from international organisations.
IATP
The Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy (IATP) was established in 1986 as a nonprofit and tax exempt research and education organization. Its mission is to create environmentally and economically sustainable communities and regions through sound agriculture and trade policy. The Institute assists public interest organizations in effectively influencing both domestic and international policymaking.
ICGEB
ICGEB (International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology) is an international organization established to promote the safe use of biotechnology world-wide and with special regard to the needs of the developing world.
International Veterinary Biosafety Working Group
The mission of the WG is to promote microbiological biocontainment and safety in veterinary laboratories having national responsibility for the health of domestic animals, and operating at biosafety level 3 and higher. This will be achieved by the development and publication of Biosafety risk assessment procedures, International benchmark laboratory construction standards for biosafety levels 3 and higher, and Quality assurance protocols for laboratory operation.
IRRO
IRRO is an information network which aims to provide access to all types of information relevant to the release of animals, plants and microorganisms into the environment. IRRO is an acronym for the Information Resource for the Release of Organisms to the Environment.
ISB
Information System for Biotechnology (agricultural biotechnology on line).
ISNAR
ISNAR Biotechnology Service (IBS) is an independent advisor for developing countries on policy and management issues related to agricultural biotechnology.
OECD
Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.
OIE
Office International des Epizooties ("International Office of Epizootics").
As the world organisation for animal health, the main objectives of the OIE are to: inform Governments of the occurrence and course of animal diseases throughout the world, and of ways to control these diseases; coordinate, at the international level, studies devoted to the surveillance and control of animal diseases; harmonise regulations for trade in animals and animal products among Member Countries.

SEI
Stockholm Environment Institute, International Institute for Environmental Technology and Management.
SEI is an independent, international research institute. It works mainly at the regional and global policy levels. SEI's major aim is to emphasize policy connections between scientific/technical analysis and management strategies for environment and development issues of regional and global importance. These include namely clean technologies and biotechnology development and safety.

UNDP
United Nations Development Programme sustainable Human development. Environment related information.
UNEP
United Nations Environment Programme. UNEP's mandate is to provide leadership and encourage partnership in caring for the environment by inspiring, informing and enabling nations and peoples to improve their quality of life without compromising that of future generations.
WHO
Official World Health Organization page with links and resources on international health issues.
