Host organism: Beta vulgaris (Sugar beet)
sugar beet
Trait:

virus resistance (rhizomania virus: beet necrotic yellow vein virus, BNYVV), herbicide tolerance (glufosinate and bialaphos)

Project title:
Validation of a concept of long-term resistance to the rhizomania virus (beet necrotic yellow vein virus, BNYVV): field experimentation of sugar beet genetically modified to be resistant to rhizomania.
Company/Institution:
Advanta/SES Europe
Year(s) of release:
2002
Effective year(s) of release:
2002
Period of release:
April-October
Location(s):

Containment measures:

The trial needs to be carried out in accordance with the Belgian protocol for growing GM sugar beet valid for the year 2002. According to this protocol only root production is allowed under these conditions, seed production can only be carried out under physical containment conditions (greenhouse or pollen-free cages). Sugar beet is only tested during the vegetative stage. No flowering is allowed. The protocol also requests a border of ryegrass or naked soil of 5 m. If harvest or destruction of the trial is planned after the start of the sugar beet dig up campaign an additional isolation distance of 25 m to neighbouring sugar beet crops needs to be applied. The isolation distance has to be krpt in place until harvest. Bolters and volunteer plants will be destroyed, the vegetative material by chopping and incorporation in the soil. The seeds shall be packed in sealed boxes or packages of a colour distinctly different from that of other packages. The seeds will be transported in close vehicles. The sowing machine shall be emptied on the test field.

Monitoring measures:

After the trial the fields will be followed up during 2 years. The first year after cultivation of sugar beet only a cereal can be cultivated. The second year all crops except plants of the Beta genus are allowed. Bolters and volunteer plants will be destroyed. A post-release treatment will destroy any left-over plant material.

Status:

Authorization procedure completed. The notifier was granted authorization from the Federal Minister to perform the trial.

Type of procedure:
Classical procedure - Art. 9§1 of Royal Decree of 18 December 1998
Notes:

In 2001 the same trial was carried out in France under the release permit B/FR/01/02/02. All the operations conducted during the trial will be recorded in a logbook, according to the protocol for growing GM sugar beet.
